Some people have taken to selling Pets and Pets supplies on line such as in Facebook , or Instagram and any others . It is convenient and a cheap way of doing business . Do you know that , you may need to register a company for doing this ?

I suppose if you are selling one or twice a year , then it is not a business but if you do it regularly enough , yes , it could be .

‘ PETALING JAYA: Any activity that generates profit, be it a company or an online business, should be registered under the Companies Act 1965, the Companies Commission Malaysia (SSM) said.

A spokesman for the commission said regardless of the size of the company or the type of sales that is being done, the respective owner should register their business.

On Wednesday, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry had declared that any person selling items online via Facebook or Instagram must register himself or herself with SSM.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah had said the process of registering the business was important to protect consumers from being cheated or exploited.

“If they have a company, they must register it, and it is of utmost priority that they display their registered address as well as their registration number on the page they are selling their things,” the spokesman said when contacted by The Star yesterday.

The spokesman said each business owner can register up to 10 businesses, and the terms are rather flexible.

“For example, if they have ABC collection, they are free to sell clothes for men and women and even accessories, and if they have ABC automobile, they can sell the necessities for a motor vehicle.

“Considering the fact that the limitations are rather small, it would not be of any inconvenience to business owners,” he added.

He said those who fail to register could face a penalty as well as a jail term.

“Business owners who have registered their business but fail to display the registration number on their page are also considered to be committing a crime,” he said, adding that it applies to the company address, phone number and e-mail addresses as well
